ATO Approved BAS and IAS Agent
What does this mean for you?
“If you provide BAS services for a fee or other reward, you are required by law to be registered as a BAS agent.”
The above is an excerpt taken directly from the ATO website.
The following is an excerpt from the Tax Practitioners website, the body that overseas bookkeepers.
A taxpayer who uses a tax agent or BAS agent will benefit from a safe harbour from certain administrative penalties in certain circumstances. Penalties will no longer apply:
- where a false or misleading statement is made carelessly, provided the taxpayer has taken reasonable care to comply with their tax obligations by giving their tax agent or BAS agent the information necessary to make the statement; and
- where a document (such as a return, notice or statement) is not lodged on time in the approved form due to the tax agent’s or BAS agent’s carelessness, provided the taxpayer gave the agent the necessary information, in sufficient time, to lodge the document on time and in the approved form.”
So change is here to stay. Finally the bookkeeping industry has been regulated.
What this means to you is that you now have a choice of a professional bookkeeper working to prescribed and tested levels of expertise, or a “back street boy” who may or may not know what they are doing, and offer you no protection with the ATO.
Our Hiring Process
All our bookkeepers are required to sit a 3 hour exam before they will even be granted an interview. Most will select one particular software (Xero, MOYB) on which to sit the exam. When they have successfully attained 85% or higher, they may then be granted an interview. At this point we know their bookkeeping skills, what we are looking for now is attitude and personality. This is our way of selecting the ideal bookkeeper for your business.
Once hired, our bookkeepers have an on-going education program that keeps them up to date in all areas of bookkeeping. All of our bookkeepers combine their individual knowledge and resources to share with each other, giving you the benefit of all this consolidated knowledge.
